Part I: Pregnancies with Acupuncture and herbs 2007.

The following case are focused on pregnancies after age 35

Acupuncture for infertility in action in 2007. Case study 1

2-23-07 update

A 40-yr-old infertility patient from Riverside County who failed to get pregnant after getting 7 months of acupuncture treatments in Santa Monica prior to seeing Dr. Lee on 8-18-06. She has hot flashes, no energy, constant dry skin, depression, poor sleep. She has seen counselor and was placed on anti-depressant. She decided not to continue with the meds due to weight gain. Her thyroid were normal. She has seen her OB/Gyn and an endocrinologist. Her period lasts only one day with little menstrual flow. All the symptoms were getting worse during her 7 months of acupuncture treatments in Santa Monica. So, she decided to give Dr. Lee a try.

Thru the careful history taking and examination and with his experience of treating over 1000 infertility patients, Dr. Lee found that she had two major areas of imbalance. Dr. Lee started acupuncture treatments and herbs designed for her particular case right away. Three treatments later, just 20 days after her 1st treatments with Dr. Lee, she felt less dry and less depressed. 5 more treatments later with 4 different kinds of herbal formulas at same time, she was pregnant on 10-07-06 just two months after the 1st treatments. But, due to her over joy, and over confidents, she did only one of the 8 follow-up visits to prevent miscarriage, and stopped all the follow up visits. She miscarried 4 week later. After that, her hot flashes and dryness came back. It took Dr. Lee another 14 treatments in 4 months before she got pregnant again on 2-26-06. This time she continued all her treatments and herbs. As of 4-20-07, she is 11 weeks pregnant.

Lesson learned: Don't panic with age 40. One can still get pregnant given enough time to her body normalized. Dr. Lee's focus is placed on getting her body normalized. Without that normalized state, it is nearly impossible to "force" her body to get pregnant. Unfortunately, some acupuncturists treat only the symptoms that is the apparent infertility with so called "Fertility Formula" as one size fits all. Some patients came to me and reported that they were not given any diagnosis as to what were the causes of their infertility and what were their imbalances even months after their treatments. Ignoring the imbalance and just force the body to get pregnant not only is not possible, but also counterproductive, as some of the "one-size-fit-all" formula were hyper yang tonic, dry and hot in nature. For someone without severe yang deficiency that formula can worsen their imbalances or create new imbalances. The bottom line is that there is no shortcut on the road to fertility. Pregnancy comes only after the body is balanced not before. The balance includes the male as well due the fact that 50% of the embryo quality is attributed to the sperm quality.

2-12-07 update

A 41-yr-old infertility patient from Orange County who failed two IUI cycles prior to seeing Dr. Lee in Jan 07. She already started on the 1st IVF stimulation shots when she found out about Dr. Lee. Fortunately, her imbalance can be restored quickly while she is in the beginning of her IVF cycle. She got pregnant with IVF and acupuncture on her 1st try of IVF. She is now on weekly acupuncture treatments to prevent miscarriages. As of 4-23-07, she is 13 week pregnant.

Comments: She is lucky that she did not have serious imbalance. At age 41, this is not common. Often, patients require one to months of preparations to get balanced.

2-12-07 update

A 42-yr-old infertility patient from Orange County who had three miscarriages including one from IVF prior to seeing Dr. Lee in Oct. 06. Dr. Lee found that she had three major areas of imbalances and started acupuncture treatments and herbs designed for her particular case right away. At time, she was taking 3 different kinds of herbal formulas at same time. After 15 acupuncture treatments in one and a half month, she got pregnant naturally, but with a weak HCG level. She miscarried again. She did not give up. With 19 more treatments, she got pregnant naturally again with strong HCG levels.

As of 4-24-07, she is 10 week pregnant with normal ultrasound.

1-23-07 update

A 40-yr-old infertility patient from Orange County who had one miscarriage from a natural pregnancy in Nov 25. 06. She already had 2 children age 4 and age 1 and 1/2. Dr. Lee found that she had one major area of imbalance and started acupuncture treatments and herbs designed for her particular case right away. After 9 acupuncture treatments in two months, she got pregnant naturally. As of 3-23-07, she finished her weekly miscarriage-prevention acupuncture treatments at week 12 and she was discharged by Dr. Lee to the continued care by her OB/Gyn.

4-23-07 update

A 39-yr-old infertility patient from Orange County who failed one IUI cycle prior to seeing Dr. Lee in 8-25-06. She had tried naturally for two years without success. Dr. Lee found that she had three major areas of imbalances and started acupuncture treatments and herbs designed for her particular case right away. At time, she was taking 3 different kinds of herbal formulas at same time. After 17 acupuncture treatments in 4 months, she got pregnant naturally, but with a weak HCG level. She miscarried 1-10-07. She did not give up. With 9 more treatments, she got pregnant naturally again but still weak HCG. After 2nd miscarriage, she had 6 more acupuncture treatments and pregnant again with reasonable HCG but again miscarried. She is not giving up and still under treatments.
